Liga ng Mga Barangay

A barangay is the smallest unit that involves politics. Most of the people think that the government is giving little to no attention to most of the barangays in the Philippines. That is actually a common misconception. In fact, every barangay in the Philippines is a member of the national group, Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas (League of Barangays of the Philippines). This formal organization currently has an approximate number of 42,000 barangay members in various LGUs (local government units) in the country. It’s one big proof that even the smallest units of politics are not left out in the national government’s concerns.

The Liga ng mga Barangay was established by virtue of Section 491 under the Local Government Code of 1991. The organization was created for the primary purpose of determining the status of all the barangays in the sanggunian. Also, the league was conceptualized to ventilate, articulate and crystallize the numerous local issues affecting the barangay government administration. One of its goals is to come up with solutions in every local issue and concern brought up.

Having this kind of organization will help in improving the leaders of each barangay in the country, as well as the higher leaders in the government. The league is even considered as the largest organization that stands out among the numerous local government associations that you can name in the Philippines. Well, this group sure has a big responsibility over its members as it’s holding every smallest political unit if the country.

The Liga ng mga Barangay is composed of governing elected officers which are the: President, Vice President and Board of Directors (5 members). The latter officers are in-charge of appointing secretaries, treasurers and other positions that are needed to effectively manage each chapter. Through reviews about levels and hierarchy of the country’s LGUs, chapters are made. Municipal, City, Provincial and Metropolitan Political Subdivision are the chapters available. Here’s the organization’s mission and vision that can be seen on the group’s main website:

THE VISION “A network of interdependent chapters advocating principles and practices of governance that help build and nurture livable, sustainable, productive, and economically vibrant local communities”.

THE MISSION “To represent the interests and aspirations of the country’s 41, 939 barangays and enhance their capability to effectively govern and manage public affairs through the exchange of information, human resource development, and technical services. ”
